Through my research this week, I have learned a lot of national homelessness facts. In January 2015, approximately 565,000 people were homeless on any given night. This included both individuals and families. 8% of these people were veterans of war. That supports the reason why I want to raise awareness to the rest of the community about homelessness. You pass these people on the street downtown, judging them only by what they seem like from their appearance so you don't get to hear what their story is. A veteran is someone who you respect and honor and when they come out of war with PTSD and end up homeless because they can't stay in a job is wrong. They fought for the freedom of the US and the citizens inside and to pass them by thinking they chose to live life this way isn't right.
I have mostly just done research this week but will start talking with a mentor, the police department, and the city about what steps I should take next. Because I have not started actually preparing of rate event, nothing has gone either right or wrong yet. I definitely want to start interviewing the homeless that are downtown to see what they would like to see or do at the event.
